My given name is Bernardo Alejandro Garcia. I am currently attending UNMC CON in the BSN program. I am a non-traditional student who has had a variety of life experiences that have helped to mold me into the person I am today. I joined the Armed Forces directly out of high school. I have worked in multiple fields of employment since then.
I have experience in the wood products industry as a Safety Facilitator and machine operator. I have supervisory experience in machine shops. I have driven feed trucks, forklifts, and pay-loaders. I also have experience in construction and concrete work. I have even stood in the pulpit for a dear Pastor and friend when it was needed. I am presently working in long-term care on a dementia neighborhood.
All of these have given me a wealth of experiences and interactions that strengthen my personal interactions. That, I believe, is where my strengths lie, in those intangibles that are so vital for a good nurse. Skills like the ability to communicate effectively with others. Being able to sympathize and empathize with those that are struggling physically, mentally, and emotionally.
This is why I know that my calling is in nursing, to help others. I am currently learning the academic and clinical skills to be effective and I believe that those intangibles that are so hard to teach will help me to be successful in my future nursing endeavors. That is my heart's desire!!
